The route
There’s no ferry shortcut to Italy, so this is a road move throughout: the A30 the length of Cornwall to the M5, across to the Channel at Dover or the Eurotunnel, then the length of France to the Alps.
From there it’s over or under the mountains — the Mont Blanc or Fréjus tunnels for the north-west, or the passes in season — and down onto the Italian autostrade to your region. The northern lakes come first; Tuscany, Rome and the south each add their own long leg.
